Pursuit of Happiness

When I heard the word “HAPPY”, it sounds distant to me. I’ve never given much        thought to it and these days it has been quite bothering me that I thought I need to ask myself, “Am I happy?”, “What does being happy mean to me?”.

Does happiness come from being rich? buying a car? Have a steady job? going on a holiday? getting married? upgrading your gadgets or owning a big house? Something incredible.

I don’t have those things. I am still working on my career and struggling financially. I still live with my family and drive my mom’s car. There are times when I get upset, stressed, and overwhelmed because things don’t go my way. Am I unhappy?

Talking about happiness, it’s very subjective. Everyone has their own definition of happiness. That’s why it’s considered subjective well-being by psychologists and other social scientists. As stated on verywellmind.com, happiness is an emotional state characterized by feelings of joy, satisfaction, contentment, and fulfillment. It is often described as involving positive emotions and life satisfaction.

For me, happiness means acceptance and gratitude for what you have. You feel enough and content even though you may not have everything. You feel at peace. You don’t need much to be happy. As humans, we always want to seek more, and looking at what other people have achieved makes us feel left out and think that we’re going to be much happier if we have the same thing. Unless we decide ourselves that we’re enough, we’ll never be. We’ll keep seeking and it’s so tiring.

Besides, I believe that happiness is something we create for ourselves. We always have a choice to make ourselves happy despite what happens, even if it’s a tough one. Since it’s very personal and subjective, we all have different ways to create our happiness. If you search on the internet for “How to be happy”, there’s so much advice about it, but not everyone can relate. On top of that, we shouldn’t let other’s people standards of happiness define ours.

One of my sources of happiness is food. I like to eat. I’m so happy when I’m eating. For me, food is one of the best companions you could ever have. It helps me feel better every time I don’t feel good. It’s a great feeling when you get to enjoy food even if it’s not a fancy one you’re able to savor it. I like many different kinds of food and I love trying new food, but I think I like Asian food the most. The fresh spices and herbs make the food so flavorful and the dish is so diverse.

I don’t think we should put our happiness on external things, especially on another person. It’s not something that we need to chase. It’s in our hands and our responsibility.

Does being happy mean that we never get sad and we never have a problem? I guess not. We can be happy and sad at the same time. We, humans, are complicated. We’re supposed to feel varied emotions. Things may get hard, messy, and uncertain, but we can always find a way to be happy.

Lastly, for me, happiness is in the moment. It’s all that we’ve got and it’s the best moment to feel grateful and happy for all the things we have and for everything that happened and made us who we are now.
